Die erste Fassung des Bildes hat Segantini in der Savogniner Zeit gemalt – vermutlich teilweise auf der Alp Flix, wie aus Bices handgeschriebener Autobiografie hervorgeht. Segantini hat das Bild 10 Jahre später überarbeitet und durch Anstücken von Leinwand erheblich vergrössert.
